Liverpool appear set to miss out on one of Europe’s most sought-after young stars. Last month, CaughtOffside suggested the Reds were in contention alongside Arsenal and Manchester City to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. However, it now seems the 22-year-old has made his mind up—favoring a move elsewhere.
Wirtz Prefers Bayern Munich Over Premier League Suitors
As reported by SPORT BILD, Wirtz has reportedly informed his manager, Xabi Alonso, that Bayern Munich is the only club he wants to join. The Bundesliga champions recently dethroned Leverkusen, and it seems the German international’s camp has reached a broad agreement with Bayern. His father, who also acts as his advisor, is known to have a strong connection with Uli Hoeness, a key figure at the Bavarian club.
The deal appears increasingly likely, with Leverkusen expected to demand at least €150 million (£127.5 million) for the attacking midfielder.
Liverpool Never Truly in the Running
Realistically, Liverpool were never favorites to land Wirtz. The hefty transfer fee, coupled with the club’s strategy under FSG to invest across multiple areas rather than splurging on a single player, made a move improbable. Even with a massive offer, Wirtz’s clear preference for Bayern would likely make any Liverpool approach a non-starter.
It’s unfortunate, as the midfielder—whom Alonso has called a “genius”—has already amassed 120 goal contributions in 195 appearances for Leverkusen at a young age.
De Bruyne Rumors Emerge as Wirtz Looks Unreachable
While Wirtz may be out of reach, surprising reports from Italy claim Liverpool have made a move for Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian is expected to leave Manchester City at the end of his contract, and signing him on a free would rank among the greatest transfer coups in recent memory.
Although it remains unlikely that De Bruyne would join Liverpool, the mere link shows that sporting director Richard Hughes is setting his sights high for the summer window.
