Mayor Steve Rotheram releases statement following incident where car drove into crowd at Liverpool parade on Monday.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, has released a statement regarding Monday evening’s incident that left nearly 50 people injured, including 27 taken to hospital and two with serious injuries. The event occurred shortly after 6pm, just as celebrations marking Liverpool FC’s Premier League title win were ending. A 53-year-old local man was arrested after driving a car into a crowd.

Mayor Rotheram visited the scene on Tuesday morning and emphasized that Merseyside Police are continuing their investigation, with the wellbeing of those injured being the top priority. He described the stark contrast between the joyous scenes of Monday, with possibly a million fans lining the streets, and the now-quiet area still cordoned off for investigation.

He stated that police will reopen the area once their work is complete but highlighted the lasting impact on the victims, especially those seriously hurt. Rotheram also expressed gratitude to emergency services and bystanders who assisted in the aftermath.
