Chelsea overtake Liverpool in transfer chase as Florian Wirtz favors move to Blues.
Liverpool risk missing out on one of their key transfer targets as they prioritize a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
Following their Premier League title win, the Reds are aiming to boost creativity in their squad, especially after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Manager Arne Slot is keen to bring in more creative talent and has identified Wirtz as a primary target, with negotiations ongoing for a deal that could see the German international become the club’s most expensive signing at £126 million.
However, Liverpool’s focus on landing Wirtz could cost them the chance to sign another top talent—RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.
According to Bild via Fussball Transfers, Chelsea have now taken the lead in the race for Simons, overtaking Liverpool in the pursuit of the highly-rated Dutch midfielder. Simons impressed last season with 11 goals and 8 assists in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from several elite European clubs.
While Liverpool were initially in the running, their attention has shifted to completing the Wirtz deal, giving Chelsea the upper hand. The Blues are eager to secure Simons’ services, valuing his versatility and playmaking ability as a key addition to Enzo Maresca’s Champions League-bound squad.
In addition to Simons, Chelsea are also eyeing a move for unsettled Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
