Exclusive: How Darwin Núñez Could Be Crucial in Liverpool’s Pursuit of Florian Wirtz

Darwin Núñez’s Future in Doubt Amid Growing Transfer Interest and Wirtz Swap Rumours

Darwin Núñez’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain as the Uruguayan continues to attract significant attention from both European clubs and Saudi Arabian sides ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to David Ornstein, the 25-year-old is among seven players who could realistically depart Anfield in the coming months. If Liverpool push through with a high-profile move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, some player sales may be necessary to bolster the club’s transfer funds.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Liverpool have made their first formal offer for Wirtz, with the bid reportedly exceeding €100 million (£83.9 million).

Swap Deal in the Works?

Sources close to Empire of the Kop suggest Núñez is open to a fresh challenge, and his agent is actively exploring exit options. Talks are underway regarding a possible swap deal involving Núñez and Wirtz, as Liverpool consider ways to offset the steep valuation Leverkusen have placed on their prized asset — estimated between €130m and €150m (£109m–£125.8m).

Should the proposed player exchange fall through, several other clubs remain interested in Liverpool’s No. 9. Atlético Madrid, Napoli, and Saudi sides Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli are all believed to be monitoring his situation.

Could a Player-Plus-Cash Deal Work?

Given Núñez’s inconsistent form — just seven goals in 47 outings this season — and the growing speculation surrounding his future, new sporting director Richard Hughes may see this as an opportune moment to cash in. With the striker approaching his 26th birthday, Liverpool could look to leverage his value now while interest is high.

Liverpool’s primary strategy appears to be a cash bid for Wirtz. However, if Leverkusen’s asking price significantly exceeds what the Reds are willing to offer, a part-exchange involving Núñez might be a viable alternative.

Should Núñez indeed leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool could attempt to make the most of his departure by using him in negotiations to land Wirtz. Whether the forward would be keen on such a switch — and whether Leverkusen would accept him as part of the deal — remains to be seen, but this is certainly a transfer storyline worth watching.
