Romano reports that a deal has been finalized as Liverpool approve an unexpected departure from Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed via X that Johnny Heitinga will depart Anfield after the club approved his move to become Ajax’s new manager on a two-year deal. The ex-Everton defender joined Liverpool last summer and has been part of Arne Slot’s coaching staff during their Premier League title-winning campaign.

Previously an assistant under David Moyes at West Ham, the Dutchman now returns to Amsterdam to take charge of the club he once played for.

This news follows recent reports that Marino Pusic – Slot’s former assistant at Feyenoord – is still without a position.

Liverpool’s rebuild isn’t limited to the playing squad It’s becoming clear that Liverpool are not only focused on securing new signings for the pitch but are also reshaping their coaching structure.

With Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong reportedly nearing moves to Anfield – as separately confirmed by Romano – the club’s revamp is clearly more comprehensive than just squad changes.

Heitinga’s departure means Arne Slot will need to reinforce his backroom staff before pre-season kicks off in a few weeks. Ajax are said to have finalized the deal earlier this week after receiving Liverpool’s go-ahead, offering the 41-year-old the chance to manage his boyhood club.
