Liverpool have been handed a significant boost in their attacking ranks after Cody Gakpo confirmed he rejected interest from abroad to sign a new contract that keeps him at Anfield until 2030.

In an interview with ESPN, the Dutch forward revealed that Bayern Munich had made an approach earlier in the summer before ultimately signing Luis Diaz for £65.5 million.

“From what I understand, they showed interest, but ended up signing Luis Diaz,” Gakpo said, smiling.

While Diaz has since said his goodbyes to Liverpool fans, Gakpo made it clear he had no desire to follow him out the door. The 26-year-old admitted that interest from other clubs “left him cold,” as his priority was always to stay with Liverpool.

“I told the club I’m happy here, and my family feels settled in England. We feel at home — and that’s just as important as the football side of things,” he said.

He acknowledged the instability players can feel during the transfer window. “It can be a chaotic period,” Gakpo noted. “When your future isn’t certain, things can get complicated very quickly.”

With fellow summer signing Marc Guehi also stating it was “Liverpool or nothing” for him, it’s clear Anfield remains a top destination for players looking for both stability and ambition.

Why Gakpo’s Renewal Matters

By extending Gakpo’s contract, Liverpool have secured a key attacking asset in the wake of Diaz’s departure. The move reflects the club’s strategy of blending big-name signings — like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak — with long-term commitment to proven talents.

Since arriving from PSV in January 2023, Gakpo has consistently delivered, contributing at least 20 goals and assists per season. His ability to play across the front line makes him vital to Arne Slot’s tactical setup as Liverpool look to retain their Premier League crown.

Reflecting on the contract decision, Gakpo said: “It took some time, maybe a year or more, but I’m very happy here — and that’s what really matters.”
