Andy Robertson Reveals He Thought About Leaving Liverpool This Summer

Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson has admitted that he seriously considered leaving the club during the summer — marking the first time he’s questioned his future at Anfield.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the Scottish defender said:
“This was the first summer I really had to reflect on where I stood. In the past, my place at Liverpool was always certain. But this time, I had to weigh up my options.”

Ultimately, Robertson decided to stay, saying:
“Our hearts were still in Liverpool, and we committed to that choice. I’ve got no regrets.”

Robertson had been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid during the transfer window. However, Liverpool opted instead to loan out Kostas Tsimikas and signed 21-year-old Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million.

With Kerkez starting every game so far this season, Robertson has found himself benched more often — a change from his usual role as a near-constant starter over his eight-year spell at the club.

“I’ve always played regularly since my first season,” Robertson said. “This season started differently, but over the summer I had time to reflect and made my decision. I still believe that if I keep performing, I’ll play plenty of games for both Liverpool and Scotland.”

Why Robertson Remains Key for Liverpool

Despite more frequent rotation this season, Robertson’s leadership remains crucial. As vice-captain, he plays a big role in the dressing room and is known for being vocal and supportive — even if he’s occasionally gotten into trouble for his language.

Having won every major trophy under Jurgen Klopp and most recently the Premier League under Arne Slot, Robertson’s experience is invaluable, especially with younger players coming through.

While Kerkez is expected to continue starting regularly, Robertson is still expected to feature prominently throughout the season. The club also reinforced its back line by signing Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni this summer.

Looking ahead, Robertson remains ambitious:
“Hopefully next summer I’ll be heading to a World Cup — and I’m aiming to have a couple more trophies with me when I go.”
