Jeremie Frimpong was seen confronting Hugo Ekitike just before the Liverpool striker was sent off in the match against Southampton at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Ekitike came on at halftime, replacing Alexander Isak, who had scored his first goal for Liverpool shortly before the break. The French forward later scored a late winner for Arne Slot’s team after Southampton had equalized through Shea Charles.

However, Ekitike’s crucial goal was immediately followed by a second yellow card, given for removing his shirt during the celebration. This red card means he will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Frimpong clearly anticipated Ekitike’s dismissal. When Ekitike lifted his jersey in celebration in the 85th minute, Frimpong quickly ran over—not to celebrate, but with a look of shock, knowing the striker was already on a booking and about to be sent off by referee Tom Bramall. Frimpong’s frustration at Ekitike’s careless second yellow card was obvious.

The frustration is understandable. Ekitike’s red card was avoidable and somewhat foolish, given he had already been booked earlier for dissent after disputing a foul decision. While both yellow cards were technically valid, it’s frustrating that a player can be sent off for such minor actions while others remain on the field despite committing much more dangerous fouls.

Despite Liverpool’s positive result, Frimpong’s annoyance at Ekitike’s needless sending off casts a shadow over their seventh consecutive win in all competitions. The suspension is an unfortunate setback for Liverpool, especially with Isak still regaining full match fitness.
