Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been heavily criticised by Celtic, who described him as “divisive, misleading, and self-serving” in a strongly worded statement issued after his resignation from the Scottish champions.

On Monday night, the Glasgow club confirmed the 52-year-old’s departure, just days after Chris Sutton claimed the Bhoys were facing an even deeper crisis than Arne Slot’s struggling Liverpool side, following a 3-1 defeat to Premiership leaders Hearts.

Martin O’Neill has stepped in as interim boss at Parkhead, though Rodgers’ exit has clearly not been a quiet one.

Rodgers accused of being ‘divisive’ and ‘self-serving’

Celtic’s largest individual shareholder, Dermot Desmond, released a blistering statement via the club’s official website (celticfc.com), announcing Rodgers’ resignation while levelling some serious allegations against the departing manager.

Desmond accused Rodgers of making “untrue” public claims — specifically that he hadn’t been offered a new deal over the summer and wasn’t fully informed or consulted on transfer matters.

He stated:

> “Regrettably, his words and actions since then have been divisive, misleading, and self-serving. They have created a toxic atmosphere around the club and encouraged hostility toward members of the executive team and the Board. Some of the abuse directed at them and their families has been entirely unjustified and unacceptable.”

What’s next for Rodgers?

The accusations point to deep divisions at Celtic, who now trail Hearts by eight points and have endured a rocky start in the Europa League following their shock Champions League play-off exit to Kairat Almaty.

Rodgers’ next move will be watched with interest. Having already returned to Parkhead once, another comeback seems highly unlikely — and a return to Liverpool appears out of the question.

Meanwhile, Arne Slot remains under pressure at Anfield after a difficult month. Though criticised for some questionable tactical and selection choices, as journalist Melissa Reddy noted, much of the scrutiny he’s faced has been “unwarranted.”

Despite recent struggles, last season’s Premier League triumph has earned Slot significant credit, and confidence remains that he can turn Liverpool’s season around and reignite their title defence in the coming weeks.
