(Video) Liverpool fans once again endured harsh and unjust treatment at the hands of French police.

Liverpool supporters were once again subjected to appalling treatment by French police during a European fixture in the country.

On the pitch, the night could hardly have gone better for the Reds. A commanding 3–0 win over Marseille underlined their dominance and moved them closer to a top-four finish in the Champions League league phase. Dominik Szoboszlai was outstanding, producing a superb free kick just before half-time and playing a key role in the build-up to Cody Gakpo’s decisive goal.

However, the positive mood among the travelling Kop was dampened after the final whistle through no fault of their own.

Several Liverpool fans were held inside the Stade Vélodrome for more than two hours following the match. Among them was supporter Daniel Austin, who shared footage on X showing large numbers of Reds confined to cramped stairwells and corridors long after full-time. He described overcrowding, limited access to toilets and mounting frustration, despite supporters remaining calm while being treated “like cattle”.

The popular Taggy’s Bar account also condemned the situation, branding the treatment of Liverpool fans in Marseille a “farce” and “simply ridiculous”.

While the distressing scenes from the 2022 Champions League final in Paris were thankfully not repeated, this latest incident adds to a growing list of heavy-handed policing experiences faced by English supporters in France. Liverpool fans are not alone, with Newcastle supporters mistreated in Marseille earlier this season and Manchester United fans subjected to tear gas ahead of their match in Lyon last year.

Although fans were warned via text before full-time that delays were possible, the expected wait of up to an hour stretched well beyond that timeframe.

UEFA must begin to take a firmer stance on the policing of matches in France, as compliant visiting supporters continue to face unacceptable treatment far too often. What should have been a perfect European night for Liverpool was once again overshadowed by a deeply troubling experience for those in attendance.
