Federico Chiesa injury update surfaces after Liverpool forward suffers fresh setback in Marseille

Federico Chiesa is facing a potential fitness concern ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth this Saturday.

The Italian attacker had been named on the bench for Wednesday night’s Champions League meeting with Marseille, but shortly after kick-off it became clear that he had picked up an issue during the warm-up at the Stade
Velodrome, ruling him out of contention. In the end, his absence did not impact the result as Arne Slot’s side delivered an impressive 3-0 victory, though the 28-year-old is now battling the clock to be ready for the weekend.
Chiesa fighting to be fit for Bournemouth

Late on Wednesday evening, Lewis Steele provided further clarity on X, explaining that the problem which sidelined Chiesa in Marseille originated in training the previous day and resurfaced during the warm-up. The Daily Mail journalist wrote: “Federico Chiesa withdrew from the bench tonight due to an injury originally from training on Tuesday that he felt again in the warm-up. Liverpool fly back tomorrow [Thursday] and it’s unclear whether the Italian will be OK for the squad on Saturday.”

Slot admitted after the match that he had hoped Chiesa would be able to feature in France, but reassured supporters that the issue is not expected to be a long-term concern. The forward will undergo further assessment by Liverpool’s medical staff once the squad returns to Merseyside, with another update likely when the head coach addresses the media ahead of the Bournemouth clash.

Although Chiesa has largely been used as a substitute this season, any extended absence would limit Liverpool’s attacking options, especially with Alexander Isak already sidelined by a serious injury until at least March. Mohamed Salah’s return therefore comes at an important time, even if the Egyptian is still sharpening his edge after a couple of rare misses on Wednesday.

Liverpool will be hoping Chiesa’s latest setback proves minor and that he can at least be in contention when they travel to the Vitality Stadium this weekend.
