Talks are continuing with Liverpool as a European journalist provides an important update regarding the promising young defender.

Liverpool F.C. have received a concerning update over the fitness of Jeremy Jacquet, who is set to join the club from Stade Rennais F.C. in the summer.

The Reds wrapped up a deal for the highly rated French centre-back towards the end of the January transfer window—reportedly worth around £60m including add-ons—as they moved early to strengthen their defence for next season.

However, just days after the transfer was confirmed, the 20-year-old sustained a serious shoulder injury that is expected to require surgery. A fresh update now suggests he may not play again this season.

Jacquet facing extended spell out

On Friday, French journalist Francois Rauzy shared team news from Rennes ahead of their upcoming Ligue 1 clash with AJ Auxerre, and his comments on Jacquet will not ease concerns on Merseyside.

Translated from French, Rauzy reported: “Kamara and Frankowski are out, as is Jacquet, whose return before the end of the season is not guaranteed. Discussions are ongoing with Liverpool regarding Jacquet’s medical situation and the next steps for the central defender.”
Pre-season setback a possibility?

If Jacquet fails to return before the campaign concludes, he would arrive at Anfield having not played competitively since early February—far from ideal for a major summer signing expected to make an immediate impression.

As seen with Alexander Isak in recent months, players can need time to regain sharpness after lengthy injury layoffs. The slight positive for Jacquet is that, should his recovery stretch beyond the Ligue 1 season, he would at least have the early summer to focus fully on rehabilitation.

Liverpool will be eager for any required surgery to be completed as soon as possible, increasing the likelihood that he arrives in England fully fit and ready to contribute under Arne Slot.
Given the injury troubles Slot has already had to navigate this season—impacting players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni—the hope will be that Jacquet avoids a similar fate.

Ideally, the young defender will recover in time to feature again for Rennes before the season ends. If not, Liverpool supporters will be hoping he is fully fit by the time he makes the move to Merseyside this summer.
