Mikel Arteta delivers revealing answer to questions about Viktor Gyökeres before Arsenal’s clash with Sporting Lisbon
Arsenal will aim to neutralize Sporting Lisbon’s star striker Viktor Gyökeres during their Champions League clash, though Mikel Arteta has avoided discussing the player’s individual qualities in detail.
Arteta is reportedly an admirer of Gyökeres but has chosen not to mention the Swedish forward by name. Gyökeres has been in outstanding form since joining Sporting from Coventry City 18 months ago, scoring an incredible 67 goals in 69 appearances across all competitions. His performances have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal.
While Arsenal may consider pursuing Gyökeres in the future, their immediate focus is on stopping him from making an impact in their upcoming encounter. During his pre-match press conference, Arteta opted to emphasize Sporting’s overall strength rather than highlighting Gyökeres. He stated:
“I would like to talk about the team, about the coaches, and how phenomenal they have been. The run they are in is incredible. They have a lot of individual qualities, and yes, in specific positions, they have great players.”
Meanwhile, speculation continues to grow about a potential move for Gyökeres to Manchester United, particularly following the arrival of his former manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. However, Amorim downplayed the possibility of a January reunion, saying:
“If I start joking about this Gyökeres situation, I’ll get in trouble. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life will probably go somewhere else.”
Gyökeres himself has addressed the rumors, confirming he hasn’t spoken with Amorim about a potential transfer. Speaking to Fotboll Skanalen, he said:
“He probably has some strikers there already, so we’ll see. No, he hasn’t [asked me to join him]. It’s fun, but nothing I attach any importance to because it’s talk and nothing concrete.”
In addition to Gyökeres, Manchester United are reportedly monitoring other Sporting players, including rising star Geovany Quenda and defender Ousmane Diomande.
