Fans stunned that Issa Diop escaped a red card during the match against Liverpool.
Liverpool fans were left outraged after Issa Diop avoided a red card for a reckless challenge less than a minute into Fulham’s visit to Anfield.
The Premier League leaders aimed for a fast start in the 3pm kick-off but were quickly derailed when Andy Robertson was left on the ground following a high and late tackle by Diop. The former West Ham defender missed the ball entirely, planting his studs into Robertson’s knee in what many felt was a dangerous and careless challenge.
While an offside flag in the build-up delayed proceedings, Diop was eventually shown only a yellow card for the foul. This decision sparked fury among Liverpool fans, with one stating, “How has Diop not received a red card for this?” Another wrote, “How is Issa Diop still on the pitch? Clear red!”
Others echoed the frustration, criticizing the officials for their handling of the incident. One fan commented, “Disgusting tackle by Diop—can’t believe it’s not a red,” while another added, “Studs to the knee? That’s easily a red. Why wasn’t it reviewed?”
To compound Liverpool’s woes, Fulham capitalized shortly afterward, with Andreas Pereira putting them 1-0 up following a rough challenge on Ryan Gravenberch. The situation worsened when Robertson was shown a straight red card after a poor touch allowed Harry Wilson to break through on goal. A VAR review confirmed Wilson was onside, leaving Robertson to face an early dismissal as the last defender.
Gravenberch was forced into a defensive role as Liverpool scrambled to adjust to Fulham’s numerical advantage. The Reds, who hadn’t lost since a shock home defeat to Nottingham Forest in September, faced the risk of their impressive unbeaten run coming to an end. With Arne Slot’s side clinging to the top of the table, a defeat combined with an in-form Chelsea beating Brentford on Sunday could see Liverpool’s lead reduced to just one point.
