Manchester United fans were left stunned by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s actions during their 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final loss to Tottenham on Thursday evening.

The Turkish international started the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with regular first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana on the bench.

Spurs opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Bayindir parried a long-range effort straight into the path of Dominic Solanke, who capitalized with a composed finish. Shortly after halftime, Lisandro Martinez’s clearance fell directly to Dejan Kulusevski, who made it 2-0 for Tottenham. Solanke then netted his second in the 56th minute to extend Spurs’ lead.

United showed resilience, with substitute Joshua Zirkzee pulling one back in the 63rd minute. Amad followed up seven minutes later by capitalizing on a mistake from Fraser Forster, reducing the deficit to 3-2.

However, in the 88th minute, Tottenham’s captain Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner, a goal Bayindir was expected to handle better. Fans were particularly struck by Bayindir’s reaction to the goal, as he appeared to gesture towards the screen, seemingly asking for a VAR review.

This puzzled supporters, as VAR is only implemented in the Carabao Cup from the semi-final stage onward, a rule determined by the EFL.
