Keith Hackett exclusive: Controversy as Robertson’s red card for Liverpool is ‘rescinded.’

Keith Hackett has voiced his disbelief over the possibility of Andy Robertson’s red card for Liverpool being overturned and has called on Howard Webb to improve referee consistency in future decisions.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee shared his surprise while maintaining confidence that the decision could still stand, pending official confirmation.

Robertson was sent off during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield on Saturday, 14 December, for denying a goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO) after fouling Harry Wilson in the first half. The decision, made in the 17th minute, left Liverpool playing with 10 men for most of the game, though they managed to secure a point. The red card sparked widespread debate, with pundits like Gary Lineker calling it an “extraordinary decision.”

While some questioned whether there was sufficient evidence to overturn the red card, Hackett insisted the criteria for DOGSO had been met. He noted that the on-field referee and VAR agreed on the initial decision, citing key factors such as the direction of play, Wilson’s likelihood of controlling the ball, and the lack of covering defenders.

Hackett explained:

“Wilson was fouled, the play was heading towards goal, and he had a clear opportunity to shoot if not for the foul. I struggle to see why Robertson’s red card would be overturned.”

He also criticized the referee’s decision to allow play to continue before blowing the whistle, suggesting this may have added to the controversy.
