Today, fans can watch matches on platforms like Sky Sports, Amazon Prime, or in stadiums on Boxing Day. But how did this tradition shift from December 25 to December 26?

The change dates back to 1871 when legislation made Boxing Day a bank holiday, while Christmas Day remained a common law holiday. With the Football League’s establishment in 1888, clubs scheduled matches on both days, drawing large crowds. For instance, Everton famously played two games on Christmas Day in 1888, winning both, before competing again on Boxing Day.
