Liverpool announces their first transfer of January with an official statement from the club.

Premier League leaders Liverpool have confirmed their first transfer of the January window.

Despite expectations of a quiet transfer period, several players have been linked with exits from Anfield. Key figures like Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah are under scrutiny as their contracts near expiration. Additionally, struggling striker Darwin Nunez, who has not secured a regular place in Arne Slot’s starting lineup, has reportedly been valued for a potential sale.

On Monday afternoon, less than a day after their disappointing draw with Manchester United, Liverpool revealed that goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga would be making a permanent move away from the club.

An official statement from the club confirmed: “Goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga has agreed to a permanent transfer from Liverpool to his former club, Fluminense, subject to completion.”

The statement continued: “The Brazilian will depart after more than four years with the Reds, having been named in the senior matchday squad on seven occasions.”

Pitaluga’s time at Liverpool also included loan spells with Macclesfield FC, St Patrick’s Athletic, and Livingston.

The 22-year-old originally joined Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £2 million. Under Jurgen Klopp, Pitaluga made his first-team debut in a pre-season friendly against Greuther Furth, which ended in a 4-4 draw. Despite his time at the club, he never made a competitive first-team appearance for Liverpool. Now, he will return to Fluminense, the club where he started his career.
