Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed the one decision by manager Ruben Amorim that has left him feeling “annoyed.”
Fernandes, 30, delivered an impressive performance during United’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Following the match, the Portuguese midfielder gave a candid interview to Sky Sports, expressing frustration that the team couldn’t consistently replicate their Anfield performance.
“We’ve been rightly criticised because our position in the table says it all,” Fernandes admitted. “We’ve dropped too many points. Even today, we can’t be happy with a draw because we need the points more than they do.
“It’s a fair result. Both teams played good football, and it was intense. But I’m frustrated because if we can play like this against Liverpool, the league leaders, why can’t we do it every week? We need to demand more from ourselves to achieve something this season.”
However, Fernandes also addressed a decision by Amorim that has sparked attention among fans. Referring to the substitution of Joshua Zirkzee just 32 minutes into United’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle on December 30, Fernandes shared his frustration.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “It really frustrates and annoys me because Zirkzee is a player who gives his all. He may not have shown all his quality yet, but it’s unfair that from the start of the season he was hyped as one of the best strikers, and now people have lost faith in him.
“We believe in him in the dressing room. I’d rather it be me in that position against Newcastle than seeing a teammate go through that.”
Since the incident, Zirkzee has been linked with a move to Juventus but made a brief appearance against Liverpool, earning chants of support from United fans. He came close to setting up a winner when Harry Maguire missed his late cutback.
