Man Utd include hidden ‘penalty clause’ in Antony’s loan deal with Real Betis as transfer is ‘confirmed’

Manchester United have reportedly added a ‘penalty clause’ to Antony’s proposed loan move to Real Betis.

After another underwhelming season at Old Trafford, the Brazilian winger has been frequently linked with an exit. Over the weekend, reports suggested that Spanish side Real Betis were leading the race to secure Antony on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

On Sunday, the 24-year-old made a late appearance in the 84th minute during United’s disappointing 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford. By Monday morning, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed Antony’s move to Betis, announcing:

“Antony to Real Betis, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties, including Man United. Documents being finalized; then travel and medical tests will follow. United will allow him to leave on a loan deal with no buy option, and he’ll return to the club in June.”

Reports from ABC Sevilla, via Sport Witness, revealed that United included a ‘penalty clause’ in the deal. This clause requires Real Betis to ensure Antony plays a certain number of matches during the loan period. If not, penalties would apply, aiming to make the move beneficial for both the player and Manchester United.

Betis will cover less than 50% of Antony’s wages during the loan.

Antony joined Manchester United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax for a fee of €95 million. However, he has struggled to meet expectations, with just 12 goals in 96 appearances across all competitions, failing to secure a consistent starting role under Erik ten Hag or Ruben Amorim.
