Ibrahima Konate shared that he showed his gratitude to Liverpool’s medical team by gifting them cookies for their efforts in helping him recover quickly from injury.

However, when it came to discussing contract negotiations, the defender was less forthcoming. Ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Lille, Konate, 25, confirmed he has been offered a new deal by the club but refrained from revealing how close he is to signing. With 18 months remaining on his current contract, Konate joins a list of Liverpool players, including Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, who are also in talks over new contracts.

Konate returned to action earlier this month against Manchester United, overcoming a knee injury sooner than anticipated. Despite lingering pain, the France international stepped up to play after Joe Gomez suffered a hamstring injury in December, leaving Liverpool short on defensive options.

Reflecting on his recovery, Konate said: “The plan was for me to train this week [before the United game], but when I saw Joe’s injury, I thought: ‘OK, I have to come back quickly and not focus on my knee.’ The first game, I felt it a little, but the pain improved each day. The medical staff did a great job, and I was happy to thank them with cookies. They’ve been cautious with me this season, but I was ready to push through a bit of pain to play.”

Konate and Virgil van Dijk secured their seventh Premier League clean sheet as a duo in Liverpool’s victory over Brentford on Saturday, which kept the Reds six points clear at the top of the table. They have also achieved five consecutive clean sheets in Europe, and a point against Lille would guarantee progression to the Champions League last 16.

When asked if his partnership with Van Dijk is the best in Europe, Konate confidently responded: “This season, yes, I think so. Everyone knows Virgil’s quality—he’s the best. For me, there’s no one better in his position. I’ve always said I want to be better than him one day, and I’m working hard to reach that level. I think he’d be proud

of that.”
