Three free agents Manchester United could sign to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad despite the transfer window being closed.
Manchester United could still make an additional signing before the season ends, despite the closure of the January transfer window.
The winter transfer window officially shut at 11 PM on Monday, preventing Premier League clubs from making permanent transfers or loan deals until it reopens in June.
Despite being linked with multiple players across various positions, United remained relatively inactive in the market, with defender Patrick Dorgu and youngster Ayden Heaven being their only additions. However, Ruben Amorim still has the opportunity to strengthen his squad by exploring the free-agent market.
Free agents can be signed at any point during the season, provided the club has an available spot in their registered squad. United initially submitted a 25-man squad to the Premier League in September, which included Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia—players who have since left on loan. With potential openings in the squad, here are four free agents United could consider if they need reinforcements.
Diego Costa
Reports suggest Amorim is eager to sign a new striker, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to make an impact. While fans may hope for names like Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko, a more realistic option before the season ends could be experienced forward Diego Costa.
The 36-year-old, who previously played for Wolves, has been without a club after a brief stint in Brazil. With 56 Premier League goals to his name, Costa could provide much-needed experience and physicality in United’s attack.
Sergio Ramos
Another high-profile free agent is former Real Madrid and PSG defender Sergio Ramos. The Spanish veteran rejoined Sevilla in September 2023 but departed after just one season.
Ramos has been linked with a move to Mexican side Rayados de Monterrey and has reportedly been on United’s radar in the past. However, if United are interested, they may need to act quickly, as Brazilian club Santos has offered him a one-year contract worth €4 million, potentially reuniting him with Neymar.
Brandon Williams
With Luke Shaw suffering another injury setback and Tyrell Malacia out on loan at PSV Eindhoven, United may be short of options at left-back. Amorim could consider re-signing Brandon Williams, who is already familiar with the club and wouldn’t need time to adapt.
The 24-year-old struggled for game time at Norwich City and Ipswich Town during loan spells and is now without a club. Having previously expressed his dream of captaining United, Williams would likely be eager to return, even
on a short-term basis.
