Mikel Arteta reveals his ideal striker, offering a major clue about Arsenal’s next transfer target.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described the qualities he wants in his ideal striker, emphasizing the need for a forward who can thrive against defensive teams.

The Gunners searched for a new striker during the January transfer window but ultimately failed to secure one. In recent years, the club has opted against signing a prolific No. 9, a decision that has cost them this season. Many view a top-class striker as the missing piece in Arsenal’s squad, with names like Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko linked to the club.

Arteta stressed that any new striker must be comfortable playing against low-block defenses, as Arsenal frequently dominate possession. He also highlighted other key attributes, including work ethic and a strong personality. Speaking to Sky Sports about his ideal forward, Arteta said:

“A No. 9 who can score goals but also perform in the conditions we face—low blocks, compact defenses, and the way we play. If he’s a great guy, that’s a bonus. If he’s available and reliable, even better. If he can create magic moments and has a top work rate, then let’s bring him in.”

Currently, Kai Havertz leads Arsenal in Premier League goals, but he has yet to reach double figures. In contrast, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has netted 21 times, and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has 19. While Arsenal have shared the scoring burden, they have also wasted key chances, dropping points in crucial matches like their FA Cup loss to Manchester United, despite dominating the game.

Arteta admitted he was disappointed by Arsenal’s lack of signings in January, especially after Gabriel Jesus suffered a season-ending injury. However, he praised the club’s disciplined approach to recruitment.

“We always explore opportunities to improve the squad when the transfer window opens,” he said. “With injuries, we’ve been affected, and we weren’t able to bring anyone in. That’s disappointing, but we’re also clear that we only want certain types of players, and we have to remain di

sciplined.”
