New Man City signing Nico Gonzalez reveals how his father played a crucial role over two years in securing his transfer.

Nico Gonzalez Fulfills Father’s Dream with £50m Move to Man City

Manchester City’s latest signing, Nico Gonzalez, has revealed that his transfer to the Etihad was a dream come true for his father, who had envisioned the move years ago.

Gonzalez completed a £50 million deadline-day switch from FC Porto, strengthening Pep Guardiola’s midfield options amid Rodri’s extended absence. His arrival took City’s January spending to £180 million, alongside Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis.

Having developed at Barcelona’s academy before thriving at Porto, Gonzalez shared that his father, Fran, who previously coached City’s Under-18s, had always encouraged him to join the club.

Speaking to City’s official website, Gonzalez said:

“He spent two years here and always recommended that if I had the chance, I should come. He spoke highly of Manchester as a city and especially the club, saying it was the best environment he had seen. He even wished for me to play here years ago, so now he’s incredibly happy, and I’m proud.”

Gonzalez has been a standout performer in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this season, registering five goals and three assists in 17 starts.

Explaining his decision, he emphasized Guardiola’s influence:

“When a team like Manchester City—arguably the best in the last decade—wants you, there’s no other choice but to join. Working with Guardiola will be incredible, and I believe he can help me reach my ful

l potential.”
