Jamie Carragher faced criticism for a comment about Mo Salah during a live Sky broadcast, which Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards later corrected.

Jamie Carragher has come under criticism for a comment about Mohamed Salah following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Liverpool moved closer to the Premier League title with their win at the Etihad Stadium, secured by first-half goals from Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai. The opening goal came from a well-executed corner routine, with Alexis Mac Allister’s low delivery flicked on by Szoboszlai into Salah’s path, whose shot deflected off Nathan Ake past Ederson. Szoboszlai later sealed the win with a strike from the edge of the box, assisted by Salah.

The result put Arne Slot’s team 11 points ahead of Arsenal, though Mikel Arteta’s side have a game in hand after losing 1-0 to West Ham.

Following the match, Carragher analyzed Liverpool’s performance on Sky Sports but sparked debate with one particular remark. When Daniel Sturridge suggested Salah aims to be the best player in the world, Carragher responded:

“I think the problem is that, being with Egypt, he’s probably not playing in a major tournament or doesn’t have a great chance of winning one. I think it’s either the Champions League or a major tournament.”

However, Micah Richards quickly corrected him, saying:

“Just to clarify, AFCON [Africa Cup of Nations] is a major tournament. A lot of people watching at home might feel like it’s not being taken seriously. AFCON is big, just so you know.”

When Carragher questioned whether Egypt could realistically win the 2026 World Cup, Richards reiterated: “No, but AFCON is big, isn’t it? Remember when Mane and Salah were competing for it?”

Sturridge added: “That’s a fact. If winning the Euros or Copa America is considered a major achievement, AFCON should be on the same level.”

Despite Egypt being record 17-time AFCON winners, Salah has yet to lift the trophy himself, with the nation last winning in 2010—before he broke into the squad. They have since finished runners-up twice.

Carragher’s comment drew backlash on social media, with one fan posting: “Big respect to Micah and Sturridge for correcting Carragher about AFCON.” Another called it “a disgrace” that Carragher dismissed the tournament, while a third added: “Glad they set him straight—AFCON is on par with the Euros and Copa America.”
