Former Liverpool player who ‘forced an exit’ on Arne Slot’s first day in charge is already eager for an Anfield return.

A former Liverpool player who requested to leave on Arne Slot’s first day in charge has expressed interest in a future return to Anfield.

Sepp van den Berg joined Brentford from Liverpool in August and has already made 20 Premier League appearances for the Bees.

The Dutch defender, who arrived at Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2021, never made a senior appearance for the Reds, instead spending loan spells at Preston North End, Schalke, and Mainz. While primarily a centre-back, the 23-year-old has also played at right-back under Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

Currently sidelined with a minor knee injury sustained in a 1-0 win over West Ham, Van den Berg is expected to return within weeks.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, he admitted that while a Liverpool return isn’t imminent, he still dreams of playing at Anfield again.

“Before pre-season started, I had already told the club I wanted to leave and get more game time,” he said. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t dream of going back to Liverpool one day. It’s still in my mind.

“But for now, moving on was the best decision for my career. I’m playing regularly and developing as much as possible.

“After pre-season, Liverpool told me I had done well and they wanted me to stay. But I didn’t really see that happening. It was completely my choice to leave, and I’m happy playing in the Premier League every week.”
