Why Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté Avoided a Red Card Against PSG
The reason why Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté was not sent off during their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain has now been clarified.
On Wednesday night, Liverpool faced PSG at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Early in the game, Konaté made a contentious challenge that many felt warranted a red card, sparking widespread debate.
As Liverpool faced early pressure, a cross found PSG winger Bradley Barcola in a dangerous position just outside the box. Konaté intervened with a last-ditch shoulder challenge on the edge of the area—one that some argued should have led to his dismissal.
Following a two-minute VAR review, the officials determined that the challenge did not meet the threshold for a “clear and obvious error.” While VAR acknowledged it as a bookable offense, the system cannot recommend yellow cards, and the challenge was not deemed severe enough for a straight red. As a result, Konaté escaped any punishment.
During TNT Sports’ coverage, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand weighed in, saying:
“That’s a foul. That’s in his back, that’s a foul. It’s a red card. If that’s not a red card, I’ll be amazed.”
Had Konaté received a red or even a yellow card, he would have been suspended for the second leg at Anfield. Instead, Liverpool secured a 1-0 advantage, thanks in large part to a standout performance from goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
