Liverpool’s new £25 million signing vindicated as harsh reality becomes unmistakably clear.

Giorgi Mamardashvili’s decision to delay his move to Liverpool has been justified, as he correctly predicted that Alisson would limit his chances of regular first-team football.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has been in outstanding form this season, making 10 crucial saves in Liverpool’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, where he was named man of the match. Across the Premier League campaign, Alisson has kept eight clean sheets in 20 appearances and currently ranks fourth in the Golden Glove standings.

Liverpool remains 13 points clear at the top of the league, with a Carabao Cup final approaching and a strong position in the Champions League, keeping their treble hopes alive. Their success has been largely influenced by the performances of Alisson and backup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, raising the question of where Mamardashvili would fit in.

The Georgian goalkeeper joined Liverpool in a £25 million deal last summer but was immediately loaned back to Valencia. At the time, he told El Desmarque: “Liverpool’s project appealed to me when the club’s representatives approached me. I will fight for the starting position, even if the current goalkeeper stays.”

However, Mamardashvili later acknowledged that Alisson was the main reason he didn’t join immediately. After Valencia’s 7-1 defeat to Barcelona, he was seen speaking with Ferran Torres, who reportedly asked him: “Why didn’t you leave this year?” to which Mamardashvili simply responded: “Alisson.” His hesitation seems justified, as Alisson shows no signs of slowing down.

Alisson’s current contract runs until the summer of 2027, while Kelleher, frequently linked with a move away, could be sold before his deal expires in 2026. Meanwhile, Mamardashvili has signed a long-term contract with Liverpool and is viewed as a future star. Despite his ambitions to make an immediate impact, displacing Alisson in the near future will be a major challenge if the Brazilian maintains his current form, which could help deliver silverware for the Reds this season.
