Cole Palmer Came Close to Joining Surprise Premier League Club in 2023 Exchange Deal

Cole Palmer’s Career Could Have Taken a Different Path With a 2023 West Ham Move

Since joining Chelsea in 2023, Cole Palmer has taken the Premier League by storm. However, his career could have gone in a completely different direction had he ended up at West Ham United that summer.

Palmer, who developed through Manchester City’s youth system, had shown promise in his limited first-team appearances. However, with playing time hard to come by under Pep Guardiola, he sought opportunities elsewhere.

West Ham expressed strong interest in Palmer amid City’s pursuit of their Brazilian playmaker, Lucas Paquetá. According to The Guardian, City had a £70 million bid for Paquetá rejected, with West Ham responding with a counterproposal. Initially, the Hammers were open to letting Paquetá go if Palmer joined them on loan. Given Palmer’s natural ability to play as a No. 10—similar to Paquetá—it seemed like a logical swap.

Why Palmer’s West Ham Move Didn’t Happen

City were only willing to let Palmer leave on a permanent deal, whereas West Ham preferred a loan move. Moreover, Palmer’s transfer was contingent on Paquetá’s exit, which ultimately never materialized.

City’s interest in Paquetá cooled over time, possibly due to his inconsistent performances and ongoing betting investigations, which could result in a lengthy ban. Given the significant investment required to sign him, City opted to look elsewhere.

Palmer’s Rise at Chelsea

In the end, Chelsea secured Palmer’s signature on a seven-year contract for around £40 million. Then-manager Mauricio Pochettino wasted no time in making him a key player, and Palmer has since flourished in the Blues’ attack.

Cole Palmer’s Chelsea Stats (So Far):

Appearances: 76

Goals: 39

Assists: 21

Minutes Played: 6,201

It’s now difficult to picture Palmer in a West Ham shirt, given his impact at Chelsea. While he would have been a great addition to West Ham’s attack, Chelsea’s success this season might have looked very different without him. Palmer appears destined to remain a key figure at Stamford Bridge for years to come.
