A Bundesliga expert claims Liverpool are targeting a dominant and ‘unstoppable’ powerhouse as a replacement for a long-serving Anfield star.

Liverpool could once again turn to the Bundesliga as they plan for the future of an Anfield icon.

With Virgil van Dijk’s contract set to expire in June, and the Dutchman turning 34 in July, the Reds may soon have to consider a long-term successor—regardless of whether he signs a new deal.

The club has frequently recruited from Germany’s top flight in recent years, with players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Ibrahima Konaté making the switch. Now, Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a potential candidate to follow in their footsteps.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool have the 25-year-old centre-back ‘on their list’ as a possible replacement for Van Dijk. Schlotterbeck, under contract until 2027 with a reported salary of €5m per year, is also in talks for an extension with Dortmund, who are keen to keep him.

The German defender has been praised for his ‘unstoppable’ work ethic and ranks among Europe’s elite in progressive passing, assists, and defensive contributions. Standing at 6ft 3in and predominantly left-footed, he offers qualities that could complement Liverpool’s existing defensive options.
