Arne Slot directly tackles the unavoidable question about Trent’s future at Liverpool.

It was no surprise what the first question to Arne Slot was as he faced the media this morning for the first time since the spring international break.

With Liverpool’s season on hold due to national team duties, attention quickly shifted to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future following recent reports that he is close to securing a free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.

The speculation has dominated discussions among Reds supporters, many of whom feel let down by the 26-year-old’s apparent decision to leave his boyhood club.

Currently sidelined with an ankle injury, Alexander-Arnold is aiming to return to full fitness by the end of the month, according to James Pearce.

What did Slot say about Trent?
As expected, Slot was immediately asked about the rumored move during this morning’s press conference, but the Liverpool head coach refused to be drawn into the speculation.

The Dutchman firmly dismissed the question, responding (via Daily Mail): “His situation is unfortunately that he is injured. For him, that means he is fully focused on his recovery. We’re trying to help him to come back. We’ve never been focused on those talks.”

Slot’s response was entirely expected
His reluctance to discuss the matter was hardly surprising, given that any offhand remark could quickly become a headline.

Behind closed doors, however, Slot is likely disappointed that his vice-captain was seemingly unmoved by an offer to become the highest-paid English player in the Premier League and instead appears set to leave a significant gap in the squad this summer.

Fortunately, Conor Bradley is already in place and looks ready to step up as the starting right-back. However, heading into next season without a senior alternative in that position would be a risky move.

Additionally, while talented, the Northern Ireland international has struggled with injuries—most recently being sidelined since February’s 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.

For Slot, at least, Liverpool’s return to action tomorrow—beginning a crucial run of nine straight Premier League matches to close out the season—should shift the focus back to performances on the pitch.
