Man City urged to sign Liverpool star in deal that “might suit everyone involved”

The goalkeeping situation may require attention from both Liverpool and Manchester City during the upcoming summer transfer window, as both clubs face the possibility of losing key players in that position.

Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to depart in search of regular first-team football, while Manchester City could part ways with Ederson and Stefan Ortega as Pep Guardiola eyes a new No. 1.

Former Liverpool and England shot-stopper David James has suggested City should consider signing the 26-year-old Irishman. He praised Kelleher’s composure, experience in high-pressure games, and compatibility with Guardiola’s playing style.

Kelleher, eager for a starting role, previously said: “I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a No. 1 and play week in, week out.”

With Alisson firmly holding the starting spot at Liverpool and the expected arrival of Georgian keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Kelleher’s chances appear slim at Anfield.

James, speaking to GOAL, said:
“Caoimhín has a calm presence. He’s unshakable and has already won trophies. He knows what it takes to succeed in crucial moments like penalty shootouts—everything you’d want in a top-class goalkeeper.

“If Liverpool are looking to move a goalkeeper on, and City need one, this could work well. It’s only a short trip down the M62—relocation wouldn’t be a big issue. Transfers like this between title rivals are rare, but this could benefit everyone involved.”

Such a move would be headline-grabbing, given the rarity of direct transfers between elite Premier League competitors. Kelleher has also drawn interest from West Ham, Chelsea, and Bournemouth, with Liverpool reportedly valuing him between £20 and £30 million.
