These four clubs have officially registered their intent to pursue damages from City, the reigning champions for four consecutive years, should they lose their case in the ongoing hearing.

While City deny all allegations, an independent commission’s decision on the 115 charges isn’t expected until the new year. However, the four clubs acted before a statute of limitations deadline that passed last week to preserve their right to sue if a ruling allows.

This move underscores the longstanding tensions within the Premier League. City have long suspected these clubs of spearheading what they perceive as a campaign against their sustained success.

At a recent meeting of Premier League clubs, City fans rented a truck displaying a large LED screen featuring the crests of these four clubs with the message “Richard’s Masters”—a jab at league CEO Richard Masters.

The four clubs involved have declined to comment, though it is understood they were concerned that waiting until a verdict next year could cause their claims to be deemed out of time.

The allegations first emerged on November 5, 2018, after German publication Der Spiegel released a series of hacked documents. Limitation laws provide a six-year window for breaches of contract reported as secret actions.
