Liverpool faces competition from two new rivals for a Premier League star that Arne Slot is reportedly attempting to sign.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have joined the pursuit of Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, adding to a growing list of clubs vying for his signature.

The Brazilian, who recently joined his national team for the first time, has already attracted attention from multiple Premier League clubs early in his career. Murillo moved to Nottingham Forest from Corinthians in August 2023 in a deal that could reach £12.5 million.

Manchester City reportedly considered a move for him at the time, and Chelsea expressed interest over the summer. Most recently, Liverpool has been linked with Murillo as they look to reinforce their defense with Virgil van Dijk nearing the end of his contract.

The Reds’ interest became public when Gary Lineker mentioned it on the Rest of Football podcast, with Alan Shearer giving his approval. Lineker said, “I understand they’re after Murillo from [Nottingham] Forest,” to which Shearer replied, “Those two at Forest [Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic] have done really well this season, which is part of why they’re doing so well in the Premier League.”

Murillo has been a key player in Forest’s strong season, which currently has them in fifth place, level on points with third-place Chelsea. A transfer fee as high as £60 million is reportedly being considered for the center-back, who recently scored against Newcastle.

With both Real Madrid and Barcelona seeking defensive reinforcements, Murillo’s rise has caught their attention. Real Madrid, facing an injury crisis with defenders like Eder Militao and David Alaba out, may target Murillo in the January window. SPORT reports that Carlo Ancelotti’s side is drawn to Murillo’s blend of talent and experience, having previously focused on younger prospects.

Barcelona, meanwhile, has followed Murillo since his Corinthians days and remains interested. Financial constraints prevented them from strengthening their defense over the past summer, but the club’s interest persists under manager Hansi Flick.

Speaking after joining the national team, Murillo shared that ex-Chelsea and PSG defender Thiago Silva has been a key influence. “A defender I’ve always watched and played against last year, who is my idol, is Thiago Silva. He supported and encouraged me to reach the national team,” Murillo said.

He also noted that the pressure with the national team surpasses that at club level, adding, “The national team is different—there’s more weight, tougher competition, and players of extreme quality. I came here grounded, focused on doing my job and giving my best.”
