“‘Needs time to develop’: Fans call for Liverpool star to be dropped after poor showing against Newcastle United.”

Liverpool edge past Newcastle in five-goal thriller, but defensive concerns remain

Liverpool battled to a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United in their Premier League clash at St. James’ Park on Monday, August 25, 2025.

The Reds raced to a 2-0 lead but allowed the hosts to claw their way back to 2-2. Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp’s side, a late goal from youngster Rio Ngumoha secured all three points.

Despite the win, Liverpool’s defense looked far from convincing, with several sloppy moments leading to unnecessary goals. Milos Kerkez, in particular, had a tough outing. He was caught out of position for one of Newcastle’s goals and struggled to contribute going forward. His inability to track Bruno Guimaraes before the Brazilian scored was a standout error.

As a result, some fans are calling on manager Arne Slot to bench the young left-back in favor of the more experienced Andy Robertson. Here’s a look at some fan reactions on X (formerly Twitter):

Ollie Salami: “Kerkez, you can hold the bench for now. Take time and study Robertson.”

Cremin: “Kerkez may need to be on the bench against Arsenal.”

Glizz McGuire: “Kerkez shouldn’t be starting. Robbo should be first-choice at left-back going forward.”

Kevin Thompson: “Hard to keep clean sheets with defenders like this. Kerkez needs to sit and learn the game at AXA.”

LFCLaurie: “Kerkez reminds me too much of Alberto Moreno.”

While Kerkez shows promise, many fans believe a spell on the bench might help him grow and adapt to the demands of top-level football.
