After a string of unsuccessful attempts in the summer transfer market, could Newcastle United finally be closing in on a new striker?
The Magpies have faced repeated setbacks in their quest to add attacking reinforcements, missing out on the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko. Their efforts to land Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen also failed, with several bids being turned down.
Meanwhile, Alexander Isak has reportedly been eager to leave St James’ Park, amid continued interest from Liverpool. However, Newcastle have made it clear they won’t consider selling the Swedish international unless they secure a replacement and receive a suitable offer.
Newcastle strike deal for Nick Woltemade
On Thursday night, reports emerged suggesting Newcastle had finally made progress. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg announced on X that the club had reached a “full agreement” with Stuttgart for striker Nick Woltemade, with the transfer fee said to be €85m (£73.5m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons.
The 23-year-old is believed to be en route to Tyneside, having already bid farewell to his teammates at Stuttgart’s MHPArena.
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie later confirmed the story, adding that Woltemade is expected to undergo a medical in the northeast within the next 24 hours.
Does this pave the way for Isak to head to Liverpool?
With Newcastle seemingly on the verge of ending their lengthy striker search, attention now turns to what this could mean for Isak’s future — and Liverpool’s transfer plans.
Woltemade’s arrival doesn’t automatically mean the Swede will be sold, as Liverpool would still need to increase their offer significantly after their initial £110m bid fell well short of Newcastle’s £150m valuation (Sky Sports).
However, assuming Woltemade’s move is finalized without issue, Newcastle could become more open to sanctioning Isak’s departure — particularly with the player keen on a switch to Anfield.
The timing could also work in Liverpool’s favor. With the two sides unlikely to meet again until late January — unless drawn together in a domestic cup — the move wouldn’t pose an immediate tactical risk for the Magpies, who recently lost to Liverpool in a dramatic 3-2 clash settled by Rio Ngumoha’s stoppage-time winner.
