“‘I’m concerned…’ – Carragher backs Arsenal for the title, says Liverpool lag behind in key area despite big spending.”
Jamie Carragher Admits Concern Over Liverpool’s Defence, Tips Arsenal for Title
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed doubts about his former club’s title chances this season, citing defensive weaknesses compared to rivals Arsenal.
Engaging with fans on X (formerly Twitter), Carragher discussed the Premier League title race while working on a related article. Although Liverpool were last season’s champions—despite many tipping Arsenal as favourites—Carragher believes things may change this time around.
In a response to one fan, he explained:
“Last season, Liverpool won the league because our attack was much stronger than Arsenal’s, though their defence was slightly better. This season, I’m worried. Our attack might still be slightly stronger, but our defence is much worse.”
In his main post, Carragher also noted:
“Last season was supposed to be a transitional one for Liverpool—maybe that transition is actually happening now. If so, Arsenal have a great chance of winning the Premier League.”
Carragher’s concerns appear valid. Despite putting points on the board, Liverpool have made an unconvincing start. They lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on penalties after a 2-2 draw and conceded twice in each of their wins over Bournemouth and Newcastle—relying on late goals to secure victory.
Arsenal, in contrast, have kept clean sheets against Manchester United and Leeds United, continuing the defensive solidity that’s made them one of Europe’s most consistent sides in recent seasons.
Considering Liverpool’s heavy investment in new signings following their title win, failing to dominate this campaign would be a significant disappointment.
