Liverpool’s Deadline Day Move for Marc Guéhi Collapses

Liverpool were on the verge of signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi on deadline day, having agreed a fee and completed the player’s medical. However, the deal fell apart in the final moments after Palace decided to back out.

The London club had failed to land a suitable replacement for their captain, and despite initial approval, they pulled the plug. According to insider Chris Williams and later confirmed by Paul Joyce, Palace had approached Liverpool about signing Joe Gomez as Guéhi’s replacement—but the Reds declined. That rejection played a major role in Palace opting to keep Guéhi.

Though the transfer didn’t go through, Guéhi’s departure appears inevitable. The 25-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has no intention of signing a new one, meaning he’ll likely leave on a free next summer. Liverpool may revisit their interest in January, potentially securing him for a reduced fee.

For now, Liverpool have enough depth in defense to manage without him. Meanwhile, Guéhi is said to be frustrated by the late U-turn, especially after completing his medical and saying goodbye to teammates. Palace manager Oliver Glasner was reportedly key in convincing the club to hold onto the defender, but in doing so, the club may have missed their last chance to cash in.
