Marc Guehi Left Frustrated After Last-Minute Collapse of Liverpool Transfer

Just a day ago, it seemed almost certain that Marc Guehi would be unveiled as a Liverpool player.

A £35 million agreement had reportedly been reached with Crystal Palace on Monday, and the England defender even underwent a medical in London. However, the transfer fell apart roughly an hour after the 7pm deadline.

Initially, Palace chairman Steve Parish had approved the sale, but changed course when manager Oliver Glasner—who had warned he couldn’t afford to lose Guehi without securing a suitable replacement—threatened to resign if the move went ahead.

Guehi ‘Extremely Unhappy’ With Outcome

According to Ed Aarons of The Guardian (via X), Guehi is “extremely unhappy” about how things unfolded. Aarons also reported that the centre-back was so upset by the failed transfer that he’s been questioning whether to continue as Palace captain—though there’s no indication he plans to stop playing for the club.

Guehi is expected to release a public statement soon. He reportedly feels he conducted himself professionally throughout the saga, training and playing amid the speculation, and some of his teammates are said to be frustrated on his behalf over the missed opportunity.

A Big Chance Slipped Away

It’s understandable why Guehi would be disheartened. While Palace is a respected club with a rich history, the chance to join Liverpool—a Premier League title contender and Champions League regular—may only come once in a player’s career.

The delay in Liverpool’s approach, which only came in the final 72 hours of the window, may have played a part in the deal breaking down.

Fortunately for the Reds, they bolstered their back line earlier in the window with the signing of Giovanni Leoni, and Ibrahima Konaté looked back to form against Arsenal on Sunday.

Still, as journalist Lewis Steele suggested, Liverpool may return for Guehi in the January window. Until then, the situation remains bittersweet—and let’s just hope Guehi doesn’t come back to haunt Liverpool when they visit Selhurst Park later this month.
