Liverpool’s summer overhaul involved offloading several players, but a new report suggests that one of those exits might not be final.
According to Lewis Steele of Mail Sport, the Reds included a buyback clause in the £35 million transfer deal that sent Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. The deal also features pre-agreed contract terms in case Liverpool decide to bring the 22-year-old defender back to Anfield in the future.
Quansah’s Buyback Clause Could Influence Defensive Plans
Quansah was allowed to leave in search of more regular playing time, which new manager Arne Slot couldn’t guarantee this season. However, with Virgil van Dijk nearing retirement, Ibrahima Konaté being linked with a potential free move to Real Madrid next summer, and Joe Gomez repeatedly considering an exit, Liverpool’s centre-back situation remains unsettled.
The club had reached a £35 million agreement to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, but the move fell apart as Palace ultimately chose to keep their captain, leaving Liverpool without the expected defensive reinforcement.
Why Quansah May Return to Anfield
Quansah impressed during his breakthrough season, showing maturity in both Premier League and Champions League appearances. While his sale to Leverkusen was seen as smart business—thanks to the buyback clause—it’s not without risk, especially considering the managerial uncertainty at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag already gone.
Mail Sport reports that Liverpool’s leadership still rates Quansah very highly, grouping him with top young talents like Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak. The buyback clause is reportedly set at €60 million plus add-ons, starting in 2027—keeping the door open for a future return.
With Liverpool already maintaining strong ties to Leverkusen following the signings of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, a future move for Quansah remains a realistic option if the club needs to bolster its defence in the coming seasons.
