Ruben Neves has categorically dismissed rumors linking him romantically to Rute Cardoso, the widow of his late close friend and Portugal teammate, Diogo Jota.

The speculation erupted after a Portuguese magazine published a front-page photo that seemingly captured Neves sharing a kiss with Rute. Jota, a Liverpool forward, tragically passed away in a car accident in July, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Neves, who has been mourning Jota’s loss and supporting his grieving family since the tragedy, says the situation has been completely misrepresented.

The Al-Hilal midfielder, married to his wife Débora Lourenço for over 11 years, criticized the magazine for publishing what he called a “disrespectful and misleading” image.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Neves explained that his intentions were only to support Rute and her children through an unimaginably painful time, and that neither he nor his family have ever sought the spotlight.

In honor of his late friend, Neves now bears a tattoo of the two embracing, and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has announced that Neves will wear Jota’s iconic number 21 jersey going forward—a symbolic tribute to their lasting friendship.
