Conflicting claims surface regarding Federico Chiesa as Juventus stay in ongoing communication.

Federico Chiesa’s future has been heavily debated throughout the January transfer window.
Nearly 18 months after arriving at Liverpool, the 28-year-old has yet to cement a regular place in Arne Slot’s starting lineup, fuelling speculation about a possible return to Italy — particularly to a former club. Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano reported that Juventus had made “formal contact” to explore bringing Chiesa back to Turin. However, Liverpool correspondent James Pearce later dismissed that claim, stating that the Reds had received no such approach from the Serie A giants.
Mixed messages over Chiesa’s situation
On Wednesday night, Tuttomercatoweb claimed that Juventus are eager to re-sign Chiesa and have been in “constant contact” with Liverpool, who are said to be open to selling the winger. The report also suggested that Chiesa himself is keen on a return to the Allianz Stadium.
That narrative clashes with The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, which reported on Tuesday that Liverpool are very unlikely to allow the Italian to leave this month. According to that update, the club have little interest in moving him on unless a substantial permanent offer is presented.
Why keeping Chiesa makes sense for Liverpool
With contradictory reports circulating, it’s difficult to determine the exact state of play surrounding Chiesa’s future. However, there’s good reason to place greater trust in James Pearce, who is widely regarded as one of the most dependable sources on Liverpool matters.
While Chiesa isn’t a guaranteed starter under Slot, he has featured more regularly this season than last, already registering 50% more appearances than he managed across the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.
Given Alexander Isak’s long-term injury and the uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s reintegration after the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool are in no position to weaken their attacking depth unless Chiesa actively pushes for a move. That seems improbable, considering his positive attitude behind the scenes despite limited minutes.
That said, the responsibility remains on the 28-year-old to seize his opportunities — something he struggled to do in Monday night’s defeat to Barnsley, where the match largely passed him by.
Ideally, Chiesa will remain at Anfield for the rest of the season and use the time to demonstrate his value to Slot and the club.
