Liverpool line up three alternative targets as Man City close in on Marc Guéhi deal

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up three strong alternatives to long-term defensive target Marc Guéhi, with Manchester City now on the brink of completing a deal for the England international.
Towards the end of what was already a busy summer transfer window under Arne Slot, Liverpool were heavily linked with Crystal Palace captain Guéhi. Deadline-day reports suggested the centre-back had even undergone a medical, but the move ultimately collapsed in the final hours.
Since then, it had been widely expected that Liverpool would revive their interest either in January or when Guéhi’s Palace contract runs down in the summer. That plan now appears unlikely, with the defender seemingly set for a switch to Premier League rivals Manchester City.
Following news that Palace boss Oliver Glasner will leave at the end of the season, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the club have accepted a £20m bid for Guéhi. The report also states that the player has agreed personal terms, effectively ending Liverpool’s pursuit and forcing the Reds to explore other options if they want to reinforce their defence.
Nico Schlotterbeck – Borussia Dortmund
With Ibrahima Konaté’s contract situation uncertain ahead of the summer, Liverpool may prioritise a centre-back capable of stepping straight into the starting XI. Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck fits that profile well.
The 26-year-old offers similar physicality to Konaté and stands at 1.91m, providing a threat at both ends of the pitch, having scored eight goals for Dortmund. His left-footed, progressive style also makes him a natural fit for the left side of Liverpool’s defence.
Schlotterbeck is under contract until 2027, but despite being offered an extension, he is believed to be open to a move. A convincing offer could encourage Dortmund to cash in rather than risk losing him later.
Alessandro Bastoni – Inter Milan
Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni is another elite option who could immediately strengthen Liverpool’s back line. The 26-year-old has been labelled “one of the best defenders in the world” by Giorgio Chiellini and boasts an impressive trophy haul.
Bastoni has won two Serie A titles, multiple domestic cups and Euro 2020 with Italy. Liverpool have been linked with him repeatedly, and a November report suggested the Reds are prepared to bid, though Inter would reportedly demand around £80m.
While a January move is possible, Liverpool may wait until the summer when Konaté’s future becomes clearer before making a decisive push.
Marcos Senesi – AFC Bournemouth
If Liverpool opt for a more cost-effective solution, sporting director Richard Hughes could revisit his former club Bournemouth for Marcos Senesi.
The 28-year-old has impressed in the Premier League and is approaching the end of his contract, which expires in June. Senesi is understood to be keen on a new challenge and has so far rejected extension talks.
With over 100 Premier League appearances, the Argentine would bring valuable experience and could settle quickly into Liverpool’s defence. Even alongside a marquee signing, securing Senesi on a free transfer would represent smart squad planning.
However, Liverpool face competition, with Napoli and Chelsea also reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the summer.
