Liverpool seal January deal for explosive winger who netted 24 goals

Liverpool Women have confirmed the January signing of winger Aurélie Csillag from SC Freiburg.
The Swiss attacker becomes the latest addition to Gareth Taylor’s squad, joining Anna Josendal from Hammarby and Martha Thomas, who arrived on loan from Tottenham. The Reds are currently rooted to the foot of the Women’s Super League table, still searching for their first league win of the campaign after collecting just four points from 12 matches.
Goals have been a major issue for Liverpool this season, with only eight scored so far – the second-lowest tally in the division, ahead of only Leicester City. The hope on Merseyside is that Csillag can help inject much-needed attacking threat into a side that has struggled badly in front of goal.
That optimism is supported by underlying data. According to FBref, Csillag ranks highly among her positional peers, posting strong numbers for non-penalty expected goals, shot volume, progressive carries and touches inside the opposition penalty area – all indicators of a forward capable of increasing Liverpool’s attacking output.
Csillag spent the first half of the season with Freiburg, scoring three goals and registering one assist in 13 Frauen-Bundesliga appearances, averaging a goal involvement roughly every 118 minutes. Before her move to Germany, she netted 16 goals in 49 matches across three seasons with FC Basel, and when her earlier spell at Grasshopper is included, her career club total stands at 24 goals.
Versatility is another asset she brings to Taylor’s squad. Csillag is comfortable operating either out wide or through the middle, offering flexibility to a forward line in need of solutions.

“I can play as a striker or as a winger. I like to score goals, take players on one-v-one and use my speed. Those are my strengths.”
