Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that discussions over a potential new contract at Liverpool are underway, though he emphasized that no final decision has been made yet.
The Hungarian midfielder is slightly past the halfway point of the five-year deal he signed upon joining the Reds in July 2023, which reportedly pays him £120,000 per week (according to Capology).
Despite a rare error that led to a goal against Barnsley last week and a missed penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, Szoboszlai, 25, has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers during a challenging season for the Premier League champions.
Contract talks are ongoing
In response to recent reports suggesting he had “reached an agreement in principle” over a new deal (via CaughtOffside), Szoboszlai clarified that discussions are indeed in progress, but nothing has been finalized. When asked about the situation, the Reds’ number 8 told the Liverpool Echo:
“Of course, there are always talks. You guys in the media make a lot out of it for the public, and that’s your job. There have been discussions, but no decision has been made. There is always progress, but nothing is final, and I’ll keep giving my best in every training session and every game for the team and the fans. Let’s see what happens in the future. I’m happy here, but you know how football works, and everyone has to take that into account.”
Securing Szoboszlai for his prime years
While Szoboszlai has revealed little beyond confirming that talks are ongoing, it suggests Liverpool are looking to lock down a key player for his peak years. He will turn 27 before his current contract ends, and if offered a long-term deal with wages that reflect his importance, he could remain at Anfield well into his 30s.
Liverpool have other important contractual matters to address in the meantime. Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson, and Trey Nyoni will become free agents in just five months, while deals for Alisson Becker, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Curtis Jones run through 2027.
As long as the club aligns with Szoboszlai’s ambitions on the pitch, it seems likely he will commit to a long-term future at Liverpool. His value to the team is evident, having played the second-most minutes of anyone in Arne Slot’s squad this season (Transfermarkt). Ideally, a resolution will be reached in the coming months, avoiding the drawn-out contract saga experienced with Salah and Van Dijk last season.
