Tension builds as Sweden comment on Liverpool striker – “fingers crossed”*

Graham Potter has refused to completely rule out selecting Alexander Isak for Sweden’s World Cup play-off next month — even though the Liverpool striker is still some weeks away from returning to action.

Isak hasn’t played for Liverpool F.C. since suffering an ankle injury, including a fibula fracture, after a challenge from Micky van de Ven while scoring in the 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur F.C. just before Christmas.

Reds boss Arne Slot said last week that Isak is making progress in his rehabilitation but is unlikely to return until after the March international break.

However, Potter — whose Sweden side face Ukraine national football team in their World Cup play-off semi-final — admitted he is still hopeful. There are also fitness concerns over Spurs pair Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski.

“Right now we’re keeping our fingers crossed and hopefully we can get some of those guys back,” Potter told Aftonbladet. “If not, we’ll have to find solutions with the players available.”

If Isak is included in Sweden’s squad before featuring again for Liverpool, it could spark tension between club and country regarding his recovery.

The striker has endured a frustrating spell at Anfield since his £125m move from Newcastle United F.C. last summer, with fitness problems and a groin issue limiting him to three goals in 16 appearances.

Sweden, who finished bottom of their qualifying group but secured a play-off place through their recent UEFA Nations League record, will face either Poland national football team or Albania national football team in the final if they overcome Ukraine.
