Liverpool, under FSG, reach an agreement for Xabi Alonso’s return as pressure builds on Arne Slot.

Xabi Alonso is currently viewed as the leading candidate to replace Arne Slot as Liverpool manager if the Dutch coach is dismissed this summer.

The former Real Madrid boss is presently out of work after leaving his role at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Despite this, bookmakers have made the ex-Liverpool midfielder the favourite to take charge at Anfield, ahead of names like Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique.

Alonso eyeing return amid Liverpool interest

According to Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, Alonso is planning a return to management ahead of the 2026/27 season.

This development would likely put him firmly on the radar of Liverpool’s hierarchy, including Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, should they decide to make a change. The Spaniard is said to be a “top option,” especially as pressure continues to mount on Slot due to poor domestic performances.

There are also past suggestions that Edwards previously preferred Alonso before Slot was appointed. While that claim has been debated, Liverpool’s admiration for their former midfielder is evident.

Slot under increasing pressure
Another loss to Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend marked Liverpool’s 10th defeat of the season — a disappointing tally for a team expected to challenge strongly in the Premier League.

Form has been underwhelming, with just 10 points collected from the last six matches — far from the standard of a top-four contender.

Unsurprisingly, betting odds from Oddschecker continue to place Alonso as the favourite to take over permanently.

Although there is still hope that Slot can turn things around, patience is wearing thin. Securing UEFA Champions League qualification is now essential, but unless there is a dramatic improvement — or a surprise European triumph — it’s becoming increasingly difficult to see him keeping his job.
