A major update on Arne Slot’s future emerged on Monday, with Liverpool reportedly moving closer to a decision on their next manager.

Xabi Alonso is reportedly being lined up to become Liverpool FC’s next head coach ahead of the upcoming season.

The former Liverpool midfielder is expected to step in after a challenging 2025/26 campaign under Arne Slot, with the club currently sitting outside the top four. Alonso, now 44, is available after leaving Real Madrid in January.

Reports suggesting Alonso’s potential move have been partly supported by BILD, which claimed he would consider a return to Anfield if certain conditions are met.

While Alonso remains highly regarded by figures such as Michael Edwards and the club’s hierarchy, there is still no definitive confirmation that he is set to take over.

However, with recent performances under Slot failing to impress, speculation around a managerial change continues to grow—unless the Dutch coach can significantly turn things around this season.

Although replacing Slot so soon may seem premature—especially considering his impressive debut season, which included a league title—there is a growing belief that a change could be necessary.

Liverpool’s record in 2025/26 currently stands at 25 wins, 7 draws, and 15 losses, averaging 1.74 points per game across all competitions.

Some may argue that Slot has been limited by squad issues, such as a lack of pace in wide areas, or that he has not been fully supported in adapting to the Premier League’s increasing physical demands and emphasis on set-pieces.

Nevertheless, top-level managers are often judged on their ability to adjust under pressure—and so far, there has been little evidence of that. As things stand, the pressure on Slot continues to mount.
