Man Utd target £18m star as Amorim prioritizes rebuilding key area in January – report
Manchester United have struggled with issues at left-back throughout 2024, making it a position Ruben Amorim is keen to address as part of his rebuild. Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have faced fitness problems and have been unable to deliver the attacking qualities Amorim values in his wing-backs.
In this context, Ben Chilwell has reportedly become a “top target” for the Red Devils, according to Caught Offside (via 90min). Amorim sees the left-back position as a priority for improvement, and a January move appears likely, especially since Chilwell has fallen out of favor at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca, who has preferred Marc Cucurella.
Valued at around £18 million on Transfermarkt, Chilwell would represent a cost-effective solution for United. Given their significant summer spending, the club might be cautious about heavy investment in January, but addressing the left-back issue is crucial.
Chilwell’s Fit in Amorim’s System
At 27, Chilwell is in his prime and would be a strong addition to Amorim’s tactical setup. His experience as a wing-back during Chelsea’s 2020/21 Champions League-winning campaign under Thomas Tuchel highlights his attacking abilities, along with his versatility to operate as a traditional or inverted wing-back.
While Luke Shaw could return soon, his limitations in covering the entire flank might prompt Amorim to reconsider his role. Chilwell, on the other hand, aligns well with the manager’s vision, making a January deal both practical and r
ealistic.
