Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has criticized VAR for failing to intervene after Wilfred Ndidi’s reckless challenge on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was deemed only a yellow card. The incident occurred during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on November 23.

Chelsea took the lead through Nicolas Jackson’s early strike in the 15th minute, with Enzo Fernandez doubling their advantage in the 75th. A late penalty by Jordan Ayew (90+5’) provided a consolation for Leicester. However, the game might have taken a different turn had Ndidi been sent off for his 22nd-minute tackle, which saw him rake his studs down Palmer’s ankle, leaving the playmaker in visible pain.

Referee Andy Madley issued a yellow card for the challenge, and VAR opted not to recommend a review for a possible red card. Hackett expressed his frustration with the decision in comments to Football Insider, stating:

“I thought Ndidi’s challenge, raking his boot down the Achilles of his opponent, warranted a red card. Poor judgment, poor officiating. It was a clear and obvious error, and VAR should have intervened.”

Ndidi remained on the field, even coming close to equalizing near the end of the first half. Chelsea ultimately secured the win, moving up to third in the Premier League table and strengthening their title bid.

Enzo Maresca Defends Ndidi’s Intent

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who coached Leicester to Premier League promotion last season, defended Ndidi’s intent but acknowledged the challenge was significant. Speaking post-match (via football.london), Maresca said:

“I don’t think Cole was the target. I’m not saying Wilf had bad intentions because I love Wilf. When there’s bad intention, the punishment should differ, but today’s foul? I don’t think so. I saw the clip, and I don’t believe it’s a red card. The one against Manchester United? That was a red card for sure.”
